What is Solar Street Light?

Solar street lighting is an outdoor lighting system used for illuminating a street or open area. It is a standalone solar powered system model designed and operated completely independent of the electricity grid. It uses photovoltaic panels mounted on the structure of lighting or connected with a pole to convert the radiation of sun light into electrical energy which then is stored in battery in the form of chemical energy. The battery supplies power to the lamps during night. The purpose of street lighting is to assist drivers, pedestrians and cyclist find their way in the dark. It’s different components includes solar panels, Lamps, rechargeable battery, controller, pole, interconnecting cables and sensors. High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps are mostly used in street lighting. High Pressure Sodium lamp, Low Pressure Sodium lamp, Metal Halide Lamps, High pressure mercury lamps, CFL with integrated ballast were also used for street lighting purpose. Nowadays, LED lamps are widely used because of their high efficiency and intensity output, environmentally friendly, easy installation, less expensive, longer lifespan and low maintenance. The characteristics of LED street light is one-way-light so no light diffusion.
